Here on the blog I actually review anime, so that way before you end up messaging me what the show is about and also the rating for it (aka 18+, or teenagers)
Soul Hunter is about this young looking man named Taikoubou who happens to be an immortal who takes on this quest from his master. Reason I said young looking is because he is an immortal, he happens to be 72 years old in the 1st episode but he looks, I guess you can say around 14 or 15, but he was 12 when he became an immortal after his village was attacked and killed everyone, only him and his few friends escaped, but he was carried away by the tide of a river while trying to buy his friends some time to escape. Taikoubou may not seem like it, but he is his master best pupil, and is actually one of the strongest Immortals in the Senin world.
Taikoubou at first rejects the quest his master gives him, acting lazy and childish about and refered to the quest as ignorant and thought someone else would be better suited.
As our hero, continuesly rejects project soul hunt, Sibu enters and takes Taikoubou with him by force. Sibu is Taikoubou's spiritual beast and is mistaken for a flying hippo by about everyone (I found this hilarious), and he normally takes it personally.
Sibu, refers to Taikoubou as master and at first is over-joyed that he gets to help Taikoubou with "the serious and important" Project Soul Hunt, but then realizes how lazy Taikoubou is, but actually respects his master and will risk his life for him as shown in episode 25, and also in episode 8 (My personal fav episode because Youzen first appears) when Sibu and Taikoubou were tied up-side down, thus, they were hanging off the outpost. (Wrong move Taikoubou xD)
But I am getting ahead a bit, after Taikoubou recieves the quest, Project Soul Hunter, he decides to defeat Dakki first, a thousand year old immortal who has captivated the emperior, Chou and trying her best to ruin the Yin. Later Taikoubou meets the Youkai Sennin, Shinkohyo, and his spiritual beast Kokutenko (a giant cat like creature), and then are attacked and well, they got beat and Taikoubou decided they need strong allies
In the next episode, episode 2, Taikoubou makes his first Hoshin, or kill for the Project Soul Hunt (which is to Hoshin all senin who have used their powers against humans, which is prohibited).
Episode 3 is when we meet our next main character, Nataku, a human that can use paopei, which normally can only be used by immortals.
At first Nataku rejects Taikoubou's offer to help him defeat Dakki, but then ends up following Taikoubou anyway and joining him. (I guess he just didn't really want to say yes to helping xD)
Nataku loves to fight strong opponents only. And if he senses someone is strong, he not hesitate to fight. Nataku actually is kinda nice though he doesn't talk much and refers to weak people as useless, and once said, "who needs friend that are beaten by a weak peopei such as that." Refering to the peopei that...to me reminded me of a pacman game...(lol) as seen in episode 11 when they meet Kou Tenka.
Now I can't go into full detail about all characters,(but man does this show have cute guys). Now I am gonna overload information on my absolute favorite character. (He is the cutest guy to me, I personally love him...)
Youzen, as you probably saw above I mentioned when he first makes his appearence.
Now, I don't know if I like the manga version of Youzen better or the anime version. In the manga...he messes around a bit when it comes to transforming as Dakki, and it made me laugh, but also I was like what the heck!? Its shown his favorite to transform in is Dakki. (Manga only)
Oh, I almost forgot! Youzen can transform into anyone perfectly, he can copy their peopei, and even their mind, but one thing is stated by Taikoubou, that there is one thing Youzen cannot do with his transformation power, and thats to copy others hearts. Now this is in like episode 23, (spoiler alert!) which saddens me because Youzen ended up being a spy, and was sent by Genshitenson to hoshin Taikoubou if he were to try and kill Dakki first. Which is later stated that Dakki was a puppet who had no soul or will power, being used by Genshitenson to destroy the Yin (I found that hard to believe at first but wow...) Now before you guys go hating Youzen, don't, because he then rejoined Taikoubou's team as an allie and helped him defeat Genshitenson (who was the one who gave Taikoubou the soul hunt project) (spoiler finished)
Now a few things about Youzen, he is the son of the leader of Kingoto, Tsutenkyoushu and a yokai senin. He surpassed his teacher and has power equal to a senin, but because he does not want to take a student, remains one himself. His senin name is Kenseijiro Shinkun. He is a person of extreme confidence and takes great pride in his appearance. At first, he doubted Taikoubou's strength, and proposed a test, but finally approved of his means and became an ally. When transforming into a doshi or senin, he can use the other's paopei, but if they are a higher level, he cannot copy them perfectly. Because of his ability to transform without using paopei, even the Seninkai call him the genius disciple. Halfway through the series, he learns how to use a partial transformation and only change part of his body. This way, he can use a number of paopei at one time. When he becomes hanyotai, his strength is increased. His own paopei are 'Sansento,' a giant fork shaped weapon that can release a shock wave, and 'Kotenken' a paopei with the appearance of a dog which lives in his sleeve (awkward but cool to me) and can be called to attack enemies or used as a riding mount to fly.
Before I finish this review, let me say that the setting is in Legendary China, and this is around the B.C. era...which is rather strange because they do have technology...and...well (electric) guitars, and they do have stoves and ovens. (If I didn't know what the setting was I would probably think it was this era in China, lol)
Now you probably shouldn't really go by series rating when it comes to anime, not all the time anyway, I read reviews first and then determine what I watch. This show has a rating of teenages, because it may contain nudity or bloody violence, which so happens it does contain these, but they are not very bad, thats one thing ratings do not say, whether its mild or high bloody violence/nudity. I say the bloody violence, is mild, there may be alot of those scenes, but the bloody glows red and doesn't really look bad at all...it won't gross you out or anything like that, (like Elfen Lied's gory scenes did me...*shivers*), but I say even a child would be able to watch this because the nudity isn't really bad, there is only like one scene of nudity and thats episode 26 the last episode, and even there you see as much as you do in Magic Knight Rayearth (so not much at all). But I also recomment you be age 14 to watch this series because of bad language, and for the fact it does have violence and some nudity, so kids really shouldn't be watching at all.
So here is my info about the show:
Genre- Action, Adventure, Comedy For Teenagers age 14+
I have to say I rate this show 5 stars! I loved it, and not just because I fell for a fictional character. *points to Youzen*
Thank you for your time, and just know, I did not finish this review in one sitting...
